She decided as a child to become an actress. She sang with the ÒUp with PeopleÓ touring company between high school and college, l965-70. After graduating from William and Mary College with a B.A. in drama in l974, she joined the New Phoenix Repertory Company in l974 and made her Broadway debut with the companyÕs production of William CongreveÕs Love for Love. She performed in regional and off-Broadway productions and in made-for-television movies to increasing acclaim. In l980 she was nominated for a Tony Award as outstanding featured actress in a musical for her performance in Barnum. Cast in her first movie, The World According to Garp, 1982, Close earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress. She earned another nomination for her performance in the commercially successful The Big Chill, 1983, and was praised for her roles in The Natural, 1984, Jagged Edge, l985, and Fatal Attraction, l987, one of the largest grossing films of that year. She earned an Obie Award for best off-Broadway performance in l982 for her role in The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs; a Tony Award for best actress for her performance in The Real Thing, l984; and an Emmy nomination for her performance in the made-for-television movie Something About Amelia, l984. Harvard UniversityÕs Hasty Pudding Theatricals named her woman of the year in l990.
